Who is Zayden Skipper? The designer of “Project Runway” was once homeless and made marching band uniforms

Like clockwork, Project track is here! After 18 successful editions, the award-winning fashion design series has emerged with a promising new season.

No less than sixteen fashion designers will compete for a spot at New York Fashion Week and $ 250,000 in sponsorships. Once again this year, the panel of candidates is full of talent. One of the budding designers is SCAD graduate Zayden Skipper who was raised by a strong tribe of women.


Who is Zayden Skipper on Project Runway?

Zayden Skipper was raised by his mother, grandmother and aunts. They made sure he focused on his art and stayed grounded, using his abilities to the fullest.

The Project track the designer‘s matriarch’s house really inspired him. Watching them make clothes for him and his siblings, Zayden also learned to sew. He recalls :

“I used to design and make the uniforms for my high school marching band’s exercise team for shows and competitions, in addition to being their dance teacher. “

The 32-year-old designer graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from Alcorn State and began working in the corporate sector. Realizing that his vocation was design, Zayden moved to Atlanta to pursue a master’s degree in fashion.

Skipper went from homeless to being the only black man to graduate from Savannah College of Art and Design in his class with the MFA, the highest fashion degree with distinction.

Skipper calls his Avant Oppidan collection: The Misrepresentation of Black Designers in the Fashion Industry, inspired by Black History. Skipper gave birth to his own genre of fashion called “Urban Avant-Garde Streetwear” which embraces “The Culture”.

The Project Runway designer has been in the industry for just over a year, but has managed to appear in Vogue Italia, Teen Vogue, Essence and WWD. He was chosen to represent SCAD at the CFDA future fashion graduate. Skipper’s designs have also been shown at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, in France, and in Hong Kong.

The talented designer has stars such as Tanya Sams, Tierra Wack, Paula Wallace and Lori Harvey as clients. Additionally, he also had the opportunity to design for Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.


About Project Runway

Bravo’s Emmy-winning series Project Runway is set for its 19th season, which kicks off Thursday, October 14. The show will feature 16 designers who will take on the challenge of creating a collection for New York Fashion Week.

While Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell and Elaine Welteroth will resume their functions as judge, Christian Siriano will welcome and supervise the candidates. Sadly, Karlie Kloss will not be joining Siriano as a co-host this year.

Project track Season 19 is slated to air new episodes starting Thursday, October 14 at 9 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on Bravo.
