Update on the restoration of the Oudolf wet meadows
Spring is the perfect time to check in on progress at Oudolf Garden Detroit on Belle Isle. The field team is working with Piet Oudolf, InSite Design Studio and Natural Community Services to restore and beautify the Wet Meadows – the lower part of the garden site near the Nancy Brown Peace Carillon, according to a newsletter from the organization. “The Wet Meadows Project aims to rehabilitate the area adjacent to Lake Tacoma with flowering plants, sedges and rushes that are well adapted to fluctuating water levels. The existing wetlands along the shoreline and in the western part of the site will remain intact,” it says. The team recently completed a city survey and plant inventory, worked on hydrological zone mapping, and seeded some sedge and rush species. Emerging plants will form the base in which flowering species will be planted. Visitors can observe the emergence and growth of seedlings.
