Tommy Hilfiger SS23 Show x Romeo Hunte 1994 TOMMY Shirt Posted by Kanye West

It is universally accepted that the 1990s was one of the most influential eras in hip-hop music. The style of this period came from the streets – from the younger generation of rappers, dancers and creatives – and eventually found its way into mainstream retail stores; a time when a young designer by the name of Tommy Hilfiger started tapping into the streetwear market.

Fast forward to the present day, and one of the most prolific students of ’90s hip-hop music, culture and fashion, Ye – formerly known as Kanye West – took a while amid a flurry of since-deleted Instagram posts (screenshot captured by Twitter user, HR), to celebrate the life-changing impact of an iconic Hilfiger rugby top.

Posting on his IG feed, Ye captioned the moment, saying, “Snoop wearing this Tommy Hilfiger rugby was the most impactful marketing moment of my young life.”

The shirt in question is an original 1994 TOMMY JEANS polo-style rugby top worn by Snoop Dogg during a musical performance in March 1994 on Saturday Night Live (Season 19, Episode 16). The shirt has been designed in Hilfiger’s recognizable navy, red and white color scheme, with a bold, enlarged “TOMMY” font logo placed in the center front of the shirt.

Ironically, the post came on the heels of Hilfiger’s return to New York Fashion Week on Sunday night, where several long-sleeve rugby updates nodded to the brand’s past while floating on her runway spring / summer 2023.

Additionally, this particular shirt worn by Snoop has been archived by the brand since its 1994 SNL performance, but he made a reappearance on the red carpet at Hilfiger’s SS23 show. Reached by rising fashion designer – and former Hilfiger collaborator – Romeo Hunte, Hunte styled rugby with a pair of tonal wide leg khaki pants, a bandana, blacked out shades, a 10 gallon hat and Air Jordan sneakers.

Speaking about the two story moments in the making (Snoop’s and his own), Hunte exclusively tells Hypebeast:

“Tommy has always strived to push the culture forward. The shirt was a major moment and caused a stir for the brand when Snoop wore it. Even now, for me to wear it, and for Tommy to have an NYFW show in Brooklyn – showcasing diversity, age, race and body types throughout the show – was all we needed . And I’m here for that!
