Awake NY, the brand founded by designer and longtime Supreme veteran Angelo Baque, has constantly refined its production over the seasons. The shape-shifting streetwear brand has branched out into its collections, but, surprisingly perhaps, its vision is only clearer. The proof is in Awake NY’s expansive fall / winter season that just released, as well as its very first collaboration with the beloved sneaker makers of Vans.
Awake’s early collections were rich in logos, screen-printed or embroidered on a set of tightly edited colorful staples like hoodies, t-shirts, caps and beanies – in other words, the usual suspects of the streetwear. But Baque and his team leveled up each season, expanding the collections to include less expected items like graphic trench coats, artistic flannels and vibrant bomber jackets. This latest collection, available now on the brand’s online store, is the most robust to date. There are double-breasted overcoats, mohair sweaters, and streetwise suits. Plus, there are still plenty of graphic t-shirts and sweatshirts to take away. It’s a snapshot of how today’s streetwear trends want to dress, which makes sense, coming from a designer who had a hand in bringing the look into the fabric of mainstream fashion. .
The season also marks the arrival of the first Awake NY x Vans sneaker, a highly saturated version of the classic Vans checkerboard. For the collaboration, which runs through Footlooker’s Greenhouse Project, the Sk8-Hi is colored with a wax-resistant dye and a digitally printed pattern for truly searing undertones. There are three different colors to choose from in total. Along with the head-turning sneakers, there’s a lookbook featuring rapper Westside Gunn and the sense of well-being that the project will also donate to two New York-based charities. (The Vans x Awake NY Sk8-Hi Collection will be released on October 15 via Awake and will be released through other retailers in the coming week.)
Streetwear die-hards will know Baque’s name from his ten-year career at Supreme. Leaving the world’s biggest streetwear brand to do your own thing undoubtedly puts countless eyes on your next business – and maybe a bit of a target on your back. In other words, you have to deliver the goods. Thanks to Baque, Awake NY did just that, emerging with a defined universe from the get-go. Since then, the brand has only leveled up, the universe has only grown larger and this season, in particular, is quite a sight to see.
