Teenage girl with Down syndrome from Kolkata designs clothes for a fashion show and receives a standing ovation

As Durga Puja is fast approaching, it’s time for fashion shows to steal the show in Kolkata. As the Zink London summer fashion show projected its showtopper, it turned heads and for good reason. Anushka Niara Mitter, 17, with Down syndrome, walked the ramp with her father in clothes she designed herself. Niara designed the summer sketchbook collection for the Zink London fashion show. She designed unique outfits with floral patterns and all models featured her work.

This isn’t the first time Niara’s talents have been publicly recognized. Seven years ago she had her own painting exhibition in Mumbai. Diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, Niara only speaks to her mother and stays in her own world of painting.

When the fashion show was about to start, Niara was busy painting flowers on her notebook. Speaking to News18, her father Ananjan Mitter said: ‘She loves to paint. His shots are different; we were talking about his painting with our friend Malini, owner of Zink London. Malini approached us and said she wanted to take her designs and start a collection called Niara Collection. We told Niara, she was happy. That’s how things started. She did all these drawings. We are overwhelmed today. »

With different strokes of blue and white mixed together, Niara has indeed created a unique collection. When she took the ramp as the showstopper, she received a standing ovation from the audience. Her mother Nilima Mitter said: “She is a very special child. She has been giving back to society for 10 years. Today, she was amazed when she saw all the models wearing her designs. We hope she can build a career around it, because she really loves painting.

The Zink London group plans to launch Niara’s designs as the “Niara Collection”. Malini, owner of Zink London, said: “Niara is very talented; that’s why we collaborated with her. This show was major and we already have good feedback. It also gave him a special identity and we too are happy.

Isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic has led Niara to be less inclined to talk to people.
Her family hopes she can talk to more people. They know she’s special. Besides her paintings, Niara also writes her own poems:

“Love can spread all over the world
The more you love
The world loves us.

She has created her own Facebook page for her art and plans to take it forward.
