A group of Taranaki women try to raise $40,000 for Women’s Refuge by selling designer clothes at a fashion show.

Runway for Refuge is in its fifth year and this year is organized by a committee made up of Justine Shera, Annalee Kemsley, Brooke Barrett and Marnie Johnston-Saywell.

“Fashion designers based in New Zealand donate items to us for auction to the highest bidder, there is also an incredible amount of silent auction items and off the shelf items like Karen Walker and Stolen Girlfriends Club,” said event manager Shera.

“Last year we raised $27,000.”

Their goal this year is $40,000 and Shera said that seemed likely with a crowd of around 300 people expected.

Tickets for the event, held at the TSB Showplace on September 2, sold out within half an hour of release, but Shera said they were launching two more rows, which can be purchased through Ticketek.

The evening will feature More FM’s Anna Richardson as MC, Professionals Real Estate’s Kris Rasmussen as auctioneer and The AM Show’s Melissa Chan-Green as guest speaker.

In the 12 months ending March 2022, Taranaki Women’s Shelter responded to 1,708 emergency phone calls, provided 114 safe nights, installed 24 home security alarms and cleared 3,931 police reports.
