Space Jam 2’s character designer has not been credited

Looney Tunes veteran and character designer Dave Alvarez shares his frustration at not being credited with Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Dave Alvarez, one of the character designers for Space Jam: a new legacy, was not credited in the film.

In a friends-only Facebook post, which he then captured and shared publicly via his Twitter account, Alvarez expressed his deep disappointment and frustration that his work on the film, much of which was incorporated into the final product, didn has not been credited. With an image of his various design files for the film attached, Alvarez wrote, “I just wanna put this over there… Last night my family and I sat down to watch Space jam. My kids were thrilled to watch the movie ‘Dad Helped Make’ only to find that … my name was left out of the credits. “

“At first I thought maybe I missed it but… no… we checked 3 times and I’m just not there,” Alvarez said. “I feel devastated. I worked hard during the summer of 2009 to help the team with many designs that were used in the final product. When I started my career, one of my goals was to seeing my name on the big screen.. and that moment was taken from me and it will never come back. My kids were frustrated and so am I. “

Alvarez has participated in many Looney Tunes projects over the past three decades. He illustrated his first cover variant for the first issue of DC’s Looney Tunes comic book series in 1994 and has since worked as a draftsman, colorist, inker and general artist on various Looney Tunes comics for DC, including the Harley Quinn / Gossamer and Jonas Hex / Yosemite Sam crossing specials.

On the TV animation side, he has been credited as a character designer for the current Looney Tunes Cartoons series on HBO Max and the Cartoon Network series 2012-2014 The Looney Tunes Show. He was also a storyboard cleaning artist on The Looney Tunes Show and the Boomerang 2015-2020 series Wabbit! / New Looney Tunes and worked on reboots of other classic cartoons for Warner Bros. Animation such as Tom and Jerry and The Flintstones.

Space Jam: a new legacy is currently in theaters, recently dethroning Marvel’s Black Widow topped the box office this weekend. Animation fans have both taken note and shared Alvarez’s frustrations using the hashtags #CreditDave and #CreditDaveAlvarez on Twitter in hopes of putting pressure on Warner Bros. for him to credit Alvarez correctly.
