Walter Hood receives Architectural League’s highest honor
On Wednesday, July 21, the Architectural League of New York awarded Walter Hood, founder of AD100 Hood Design Studio, its President’s Medal. Dedicated to outstanding achievement in the fields of architecture, urban planning, art, design and the environment, the award is the league’s highest honor, with past recipients such as Darren Walker , Ada Louise Huxtable, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, and Renzo Piano, among others. In an online statement, the organization hailed Hood as “one of the most influential public space designers of our time, an artist who views his work as a cultural practice, creating beauty in everyday environments, revealing hidden stories, renewing links, guiding the path to coexistence in all our multiplicity and difference.
TIWA Select takes over Large plates
For Alex Tieghi-Walker, founder of the TIWA Select design gallery, 2021 is the summer of entertainment. Last month at LA Showcase Sized, TIWA Select exhibited a range of mezcal mugs, all handmade by artists like Jim McDowell and Minjae Kim. Now the gallery owner is seeing bigger, literally, as he and his co-curator Fiona McKay take on Large plates, where oversized trays reign supreme. August 5-7 in Stone Ridge, New York, Large plates will feature platters two to four feet long each, produced by artists such as Simone Bodmer-Turner and Deborah Needleman. Rather than displaying the exhibit in a typical gallery setting, curators embrace the exterior: a forest adjacent to a barn on McKay’s upstate property is intended as the exhibit space.

Burberry is rolling out a new design concept, which is better encapsulated in the brand’s new flagship, Sloane Street, in London. The AD100 debuts in 2021 Vincenzo De Cotiis collaborated with the company on the design, which features checkerboard floors, bright gallery-like displays, and a grid ceiling reminiscent of the brand’s iconic plaid. The new aesthetic will also define three stores that have yet to open, in Shanghai, Paris and elsewhere in London.
Pierre Yovanovitch opens a new showroom in Paris
This week, Pierre Yovanovitch, French interior connoisseur and AD100 designer, opened the doors of his very first furniture showroom. Located next to the company’s headquarters in Paris, the new space includes 300 square feet of new and existing furniture pieces. Wanting a space that truly reflects the brand, Yovanovitch brought in four galleries to organize the artwork, which is hung on custom bright orange walls designed by Atelier Mériguet-Carrère. The showroom is only open by appointment.
Dallas design scene is about to get more colorful
Lone Star State designers will soon have easier access to Kelly Wearstler’s decidedly fiery paint palette, Roman and Williams’ natural pigments, and more to Farrow & Ball’s rich line of paints and wallpapers. The historic British manufacturer is opening a new showroom in the Dallas Design District, marking the brand’s first commercial opening since 2018. A smooth launch is expected to retail this month; doors of the exhibition hall officially opened to the public in September.
