Overwatch 2 hero designer teases Doomfist rework in a tank

The developers of Overwatch 2 revealed redesigns for Sombra and Bastion during the OWL 2021 Grand Finals, but they also announced major changes for Doomfist in the process.

Doomfist has always been a controversial hero in Overwatch thanks to his ability to quickly take down or take out enemies. His Rocket Punch, Rising Uppercut into Primary Fire, and even Meteor Strike Ultimate are all deadly staples of Talon DPS.

However, as the developers attempt to push the sequel away from crowd control abilities, it looks like they are taking Doomfist one step further, completely reconfiguring him into a new role.

Chief Hero Designer Geoff Goodman was at the OWL Grand Finals to discuss the game’s progress and shared some exciting news.

Doomfist as a tank in Overwatch 2?

“It is going well. We do constant playtests all the time. Finding new things that we want to try and a lot of things that don’t work, ”he said. “And a lot of things that work kind of surprise us. “

According to Goodman, the developers of Overwatch 2 are in a position where they are still experimenting with a lot of “big things” and have revealed the next steps.

“We’re going to try Doomfist as a tank and things like that,” he explained but noted that he wasn’t sure it would work.

Can you imagine Doomfist as a tank hero?

The developers of Overwatch 2 had previously suggested that Doomfist could benefit from a major rebalance, but nothing involves such a big change as a role swap.

Previously, the only hero who was ever moved to a different role was Symmetra, which went from support to DPS, so it’s a pretty big move, if the devs find Doomfist to perform well in the tank category.

Unfortunately, Goodman didn’t provide any additional details on how Doomfist might function as a tank, but given that the direction of tanks in Overwatch 2 is for them to be more brawlers, there might be some interesting ways to adjust it.

We’ll have to see what the future holds as Overwatch 2 moves closer to beta and the pros play on a first release in April 2022.
