jingle design’s xmacallan bar in china celebrates raw materiality

jingle design completes xmacallan bar in china

To Shen Yang, China, Jingle Design has unveiled its new bar XMacallan, composing a melody of classic styles and quality materials to create an intimate and immersive space beyond the hustle and bustle of city life. The cathedral-like interior bar celebrates the unadorned beauty of raw, natural materials, featuring wood, Pierre and steel in their purest forms, accentuated by soft lighting, to convey a discreetly luxurious and warm atmosphere. These textures complement the pattern of utilitarian oak barrels, the key visual element of the project. Hundreds of these casks are stacked along the walls in a repeating geometric formation in a distinct sculptural display that marks the enjoyment of the whiskey they produce.

“In designing the XMacallan Bar, we wanted to endow the space with beauty but also provide practical solutions to maximize its usability and values,” notes Jingle Design. Adopting a minimalist approach and rejecting redundant decoration, the Chinese interior design studio installs stacks of oak barrels of whiskey in a repeated pattern on the walls above the vast, cathedral-like interior space. This key design feature provides a striking aesthetic to the bar in keeping with its theme and reminiscent of a large-scale art installation. The casks scatter light and shadow throughout the space and provide a memorable metaphor for time and the whiskey-making process. Upon entering the space, the barrels are complemented by an array of warm, indirect light, softly illuminating the space and providing guests with an intimate and comfortable ambiance in which to relax. Looking down from the second floor viewing platform, the asymmetrical arrangement of space around a central axis becomes apparent. Visitors circulating in the center of the axis enliven the space, while the bar counter offers a visual and luminous focus.

raw and pure materiality accentuated by subdued lighting

Jingle Design uses materials in their rawest and purest forms to emphasize the natural and original qualities inherent in materials. Thus, wood, stone and steel are all presented in a pure and unadorned way, complementing the pattern of oak barrels. The soft, understated lighting design of XMacallan Bar emphasizes the sculptural beauty of the stone ceiling and walls, the solidity of its wooden beams and the raw materiality of the barrels themselves. In an exhibit-like display, lighted cases interspersed on the walls provide a unified sequence and offer additional points of visual interest for visitors. Each delicate display showcases a bottle of whiskey from a different year. Leather sofas and wooden paneling complete the warm aesthetic, providing respite from the stresses of the outside world.
