I currently live: With his family in South London, with his parents and four of his six siblings.
Claiming fame: Sanders is a promising British menswear designer who collaborated with Gucci on a short film and won this year’s French Andam Fashion Awards. Her brand of the same name is acclaimed for its wavy shirts and gathered dress pants inspired by Jamaican traditions. Her clothes have a “borderline feminine feel,” Sanders said.
Big cut: Her interest in fashion began at an early age. At the age of eight, she slept too much and she and her friends made a purse out of pillow cases. As an 18-year-old student at Kingston University in London, she bought tickets to the British Fashion Awards and made her own catwalk-ready dress for the event. At 24, a few months after graduating from the Royal College of Arts in 2017, she launched the Bianca Saunders label.
Why men’s fashion? “When it comes to women’s clothing, I have always felt obsessed with images as beautiful as I wanted to create,” she said. Menswear, meanwhile, said, “I found it easy to find my aesthetic and extend it, not just making work clothes.”
Latest project: In July, Sanders won the Andam Grand Prix. The previous winners are Martin Margiela and Christophe Lemaire. The prize includes a € 300,000 grant, but she called the advice of Balenciaga CEO Cedric Charbita “literally precious”.
Next: This month, the capsule collection of Farah, a traditional British brand, was unveiled. “It’s about creating the quality and the feel that makes young men feel mature and older men look younger, but it’s appropriate,” she said.
Gender line: His brand is technically aimed at men, but Saunders wants consumers to see his collection as unisex. In fact, Saunders is sometimes in the moonlight as a model for her label. “I’m quite tall and my arms are quite long,” she said. “So I try on jackets and sometimes pants because I have to know how someone feels in them.”
