The Precision EV concept builds on Acura’s Precision concept, unveiled in 2016, which previewed the current-generation TLX sedan. The old concept car signaled Acura’s commitment to performance, while the new concept reveals the brand’s intentions for the electrified era and hints at the next electric crossover.
“It’s a perfect evolution and it’s not such a dramatic departure that a customer will walk into the next-generation Acura and say, ‘That doesn’t look like an Acura,'” Korkor said. Automotive News.
“All of the designs that we tend to incorporate, starting with the original Precision Concept, are truly timeless beauty and ensure the look remains consistent year after year,” he said.
The dimensions of the Precision EV are larger than those of a compact crossover. It stretches longer and wider than the RDX and is sized closer to the three-row MDX. It also sits on large 23-inch wheels with contrasting yellow brake calipers that stand out against the matte blue exterior.
The Precision EV’s bold front fascia features an illuminated version of Acura’s Diamond Pentagon Grille. Instead of a traditional grille, designers used wavy lights to accentuate the front end and the oversized Acura badge. The Precision EV still features the brand’s signature Chicane lighting front and rear and incorporates Particle Glitch lighting graphics that add a mysterious, futuristic touch.
Guy Melville-Brown, the concept vehicle’s lead exterior designer, said that when the team was creating the lighting scheme, they were “heavily inspired” by the bioluminescent jellyfish.
Melville-Brown also pointed to a running character line around the entire body that the team addressed as a “water line.” He described everything above the line as sleek, clean and dynamic and everything below as technical, performance-based and functional.
The Double Apex Blue exterior’s matte finish is also meant to look more “liquid and flowing,” according to Gypsy Modina, Acura’s color materials finish creative. They applied multiple coats to give depth to the matte blue, which Medina says has undertones of aqua and “smoky heliotrope,” which is a reddish color.
The cabin interior goes beyond the era of electrification. A yellow-style steering wheel signals what could happen when Acura EVs are self-driving, but retain the ability to select a manual driving experience.
